Staying relevant in todays evolving illustration field is of the upmost importance now more than ever. There is an increasing need for illustrator/designer hybrids possessing both skill-sets in today’s market. MICRO is one way to address this need and prepare students for the competitive creative world ahead.

MICRO is the KCAI Illustration elective operating as an in-house “micro agency” within the KCAI Illustration Department. We first offered our services to the Kansas City area in the spring of 2015.

The agency is composed of selected junior and senior students, and faculty led by Assistant Professor, David Terrill.  The student staff is involved in the creation of professional illustration and design work for clients in the surrounding Kansas City community such as the Coterie Theatre, the KC Streetcar Authority and The American Jazz Museum. The students perform the creative tasks of a small design firm (illustrator, designer, art director, account management), present the work to the client through the stages of the project and prepare the work for final delivery to the client. Students are also responsible for researching, identifying and “pitching” new business to identified potential clients. The students work alongside faculty in the execution of the client work.  This experience educates the student in alternate avenues of illustration that could include a position in an in-house agency, illustrator/designer hybrid and art direction in addition to the freelance illustration path. Through this exposure, students receive hands-on experience working with clients in a professional manner resulting in tangible results.
