These photos are of my sketches I made while sitting in on a recording of a new Jazz album by Christopher Burnett Quartet. I spent the day in studio sketching and painting the musicians while listening to exceptional music (and selfishly one of my favorite music forms). Indeed a treat for all the senses.
These sketches are drawn directly on to Arches 140# Hot Press Watercolor paper with a Noodler’s Ink Ahab flex nib fountain pen, loaded with Noodler’s Black Bulletproof Ink. (Nerd moment.)
I don’t work a drawing out with a pencil as I don’t want to inhibit the searching lines of the ink, living with the marks that are made, the lines creating the energy. This process allows me to stay in the moment as the subjects move and change positions, without getting caught up in making “perfect” lines.
These initial sketches will inform the creation of the LP album cover and interior design/illustration. I will be using hand lettering with the drawings to enhance the design. I will update the page as the project progresses.
